Clubs run from September through May for youth 4 to 18 years old. With a curriculum for every group level, Camp Fire Clubs offer age appropriate experiences for all members. Club Leaders are adult group leaders who follow a curriculum, guiding youth members through a year of activities teaching them life and outdoor skills and providing opportunities for youth to grow. Being a club leader is a lot of work, but comes with great rewards. This is a volunteer position and there is an application process. We have many programs throughout the year that need volunteers. I'm Taking Care courses happen several times a year, and are paid positions. We are always looking for leaders to bring Des Moines area kids up to speed on being the best babysitters in Iowa. This program is sponsored by West Des Moines Community Education and take place over four Saturdays in the Fall and Spring. Hantesa Day Camp (School Year) is always looking for volunteer staff to participate as camp counselors over winter and spring breaks!
We have seasonal, summer staff opportunities at all of our overnight and day camp programs throughout Des Moines, Ames, and Boone. We are always searching for those 18 and older, with an interest in working with youth and the outdoors to mentor our campers throughout the summer. Positions are paid from late May through mid-August and offer benefits beyond a paycheck. Throughout the year, Camp Hantesa and the Camp Fire Service Center are in need of volunteers for work days and camp clean ups. You can come on your own, or bring your organization to help us get ready for summer camp or help us tear down for the winter! It's a big project that needs lots of hands! We also allow groups or individuals to come out and complete service projects around Camp or the Service Center. Painting buildings, planting gardens, building projects, and many others have been completed by service groups. Some groups who have visited Camp Fire Heart of Iowa include, John Deere, Wells Fargo Volunteers, United Way of Story County and Central Iowa, Walnut Creek Church, and others.
