Summer Day Camp Staff- Various Locations (Ames, Des Moines, West Des Moines)

Summer Day Camp staff positions are open in Ames and Des Moines for Summer 2018! Qualified staff members are energized every day to work with campers and share a passion for learning through experience. These positions do require staff to be outdoors throughout the day and to actively engage with all youth throughout the entire programming period. Camp Hantesa Seasonal Administrative Positions

Camp Hantesa Administrative Team

The administrative team at Camp Hantesa is comprised of eight department coordinators who directly oversee a specific program at camp. They are responsible for planning and scheduling activities, supervising the staff in their department, and making sure everyone (kids & staff) are having a great time at camp! Camp Hantesa Seasonal Counselor/Activity Specialist Positions

Camp Hantesa Counselors/Activity Specialists

At Camp Hantesa our staff serve a dual role as both cabin counselors and activity specialists. Each counselor chooses a particular department to be a part of and then is trained to lead activities within that department. Counselors are responsible for the day-to-day supervision of campers and implementation of camp programming. Counselors will have the opportunity to work with both day camp and resident camp programs. Counselors live in cabins with a co-counselor and children of the same gender during overnight sessions. Camp Hantesa Support Staff

The support staff are an essential part of the team at Camp Hantesa. In short, support staff ensure that camp is running smoothly. They provide food, transportation, and functional work/living spaces for our staff and campers. Bus Driver

Minimum Age: 21
Salary: Starting at $70.00/day
Number of Openings: 1
Description: Responsible for the safe and timely transportation of campers from the Des Moines Service Center to Camp Hantesa and back. Additional responsibilities include transportation of campers to the lake and miscellaneous field trips, basic vehicle maintenance, and positively interacting with other staff, campers, and parents. Class B CDL with Air Brakes Endorsement is required to apply.

Maintenance Assistant

Minimum Age: 18
Salary: Starting at $8.50/hour
Number of Openings: 1
Description: Assists the Camp Caretaker with a variety of maintenance projects including plumbing, vehicle maintenance, carpentry, and other projects/needs as they arise.

Office Manager

Minimum Age: 18
Salary: Starting at $8.50/hour
Number of Openings: 2
Description: Responsible for the organization of Camp Hantesa summer programs. Office Manager must be proficient in Microsoft Office programs and must be comfortable talking on the telephone with parents and vendors. Preference given to candidates with previous customer experience.

Chef/Chef’s Assistant

Minimum Age: 21 (preferred)
Salary: Starting at $10.00/hour (Chef), $8.50/hour (Chef’s Assistant)
Number of Openings: 4
Description: Responsible for providing healthy and balanced meals daily for the camp community. Chef must have meal planning experience and must have experience preparing meals for people with dietary restrictions such as non-dairy and gluten free diets.

Child Care Site Director

(Sparks After School Program at Merrill Middle School)


The Site Director position is a direct care position responsible for the supervision of students and employees. This person will plan and implement lesson plans to encourage educational growth through structured time and free play among middle school aged students.

TRAINING NEEDS (training provided):

  • Continuing education through approved training
  • CPR/ First Aid/ AED
  • Mandatory Reporter


  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • High School Degree or GED Diploma and 1 or more years of experience in the child care field, OR Qualifying College Degree in a Youth Development Field
  • Must have current, or be willing to obtain a First Aid and CPR/Mandatory Reporter Certification
  • Ability to work with Children of all ages

Responsible for:

  • Preparing the weekly schedule for Middle Age Youth around to include a balance of activities, crafts, outdoor, and educational programs for the best possible program.
  • Making changes in the program when weather or other circumstances make it necessary. Being sure to communicate all changes with staff members and Center Director.
  • Supervising staff, including formal and informal evaluations.
  • Implements programs in a positive atmosphere.
  • Encouraging communication and team work within the staff, and being part of the programmatic planning.
  • Caring for the health of Participants. Make sure medication is given at the correct time and getting documented. Notify parents and Program Director as soon as possible in the case of an injury or illness.
  • Maintaining a 10:1 camper to staff ratio & taking daily attendance and calling to check on those absent unless prior notifications or arrangements have been made.
  • Communicating with parents when necessary on strengths and challenges of their children.
  • Keeping all necessary health and consent forms and medication and first aid records.
  • Collecting payments from parents brought to the site and writing receipts. Turn in to Camp Fire Service Center Office Staff as soon as possible.
  • Set-up and tear-down of equipment at your site at the beginning and end of the program. As well as maintaining expectations of the site as far as cleanliness and upkeep throughout the school year.
  • All other duties as assigned pertaining to the overall organization and delivery of the program.
