MEET THE STAFF




Executive Director

BOB REID

Bob has served as the director of Camp Fire Heart of Iowa since 2005. Bob has over 20 years of experience working in youth development and nonprofit management.
Prior to coming on board with Camp Fire, Bob held a variety of positions in youth development primarily with the Boy Scouts of America, including directing the Learning for Life division in Minneapolis and as a field executive, in Omaha, developing at-risk youth and in-school character education programs.
In addition to his knowledge in program development and fundraising, Bob has served as a camp director and outdoor education facilitator. He holds a degree in Public Administration from the University of Northern Iowa.
When not at Camp Fire, Bob enjoys camping, photography, training dogs, and spending time with his wife, Brenda and two sons, Dakota and Jake.


Director – Camp Hantesa

MICHAEL JOHNSON

Michael grew up in Garden City, a small town in western Kansas. After college Michael, a proud Kansas State graduate, worked in New England camping for over a decade. Michael got his start as the Athletic Director at Camp Waziyatah. He then moved on to Camp Wekeela, where he stayed for seven years as the Head Counselor. Finally he graciously accepted the position of Assistant Director at Camp Caribou. While at Camp Wekeela, Michael met his wife Erika. They have two daughters, Maya and Annika, who absolutely adore summer camp. Michael loves traveling around the country with his family in their spare time. As previously mentioned, he loves all things Kansas State, he and his girls spend time in Manhattan, KS following everything from football to track & field. One of his daughters wants to be a K-State basketball player and the other wants to be the mascot. Michael can also be found playing a sport with a ball of some sort whether it be golf, tennis, basketball or Australian Rules Football; he loves them all. Michael is thrilled to be working with Camp Fire and is excited to get to know and love Iowa.


Senior Program Director

JENNIFER RADLEY

Jennifer has been with Camp Fire since 2016. She attended Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska. She graduated with a degree in Psychology and played four years of collegiate Softball. After graduation, Jennifer was a graduate assistant for softball at Wayne State, then went on to coach softball full time at Buena Vista University for three years. For Jennifer’s first two years at Camp Fire, she oversaw two Des Moines area day camps and the before and after school programs. In her third year, she will transition to taking over the Ames day camps. She enjoys spending lots of time with her nieces, watching movies, playing sports, going to trivia contests, and eating Mexican food.





Program Manager – Camp Hantesa

ALANA MATTESON

Alana grew up in a small town outside of Rochester, NY. She graduated from Roberts Wesleyan College (also in Rochester) in 2013 with her bachelors in Social Work. From there, she’s done many different things including running an after school program, and Americorps. She also spent two years living on campus at John Carroll University working with RAs in Campus Ministry. She did all this while also being the Assistant Director at the summer camp she grew up going to in Western NY. Alana enjoys thrifting, knitting, hiking, and drinking coffee and is looking forward to experiencing Camp Fire and Iowa!



Office Manager

ARIKA GRAYBILL

Arika Graybill is from Council Bluffs, Iowa and moved to Des Moines after High School. She has her Administrative Assistant Associates’ Degree and Office Specialist Certificate from DMACC. Prior to Camp Fire, she worked in child care, telemarketing, as a bank teller, and as a Internet Support Technician. She is married and has three daughters. She enjoys spending time with family and watching her children play sports.



Facilities Director – Camp Hantesa

BLAKE BARRETT

Blake grew up attending Camp Fire programs in Des Moines and at Camp Hantesa. He spends his free time helping out on his family’s farm, hunting, fishing, and putting on rodeo events.






Bookkeeper

CINDY HOOK

Cindy grew up in rural Dubuque County. She graduated from the University of Iowa and later earned a second BA in Accounting from Upper Iowa University. Cindy and her husband Roger have four grown daughters. They enjoy time with family, motorcycling, kayaking and bicycling. On her own Cindy likes yoga, reading, and entering silly contests.



Marketing/Community Outreach – Intern

GRACE SCHOFIELD

Grace begins her senior year at Drake University as a student-athlete, playing Volleyball, while pursuing a double major in Public Relations and Advertising with concentrations in business education and leadership. She will be working as the Marketing/Community Outreach Intern this fall. Grace has previously worked for camp as an Outrageous Day Camp Counselor and with the Sparks after school program at Merrill Middle School. In her free time, she loves being with family and friends, movie nights, scrap booking and spending time at the lake! Her favorite foods consist of brownies and ice cream!

Program Director

DANIELLE WALTER

Danielle grew up in Ankeny, Iowa. After graduating high school she went on to get her bachelors degree in Social Work at the University of Iowa. While in college and after graduation Danielle participated in Camp Adventure where she worked with kids on military bases in Japan and the Netherlands. Danielle is the director for two summer day camps, Camp Discovery and Camp Outrageous, and oversees the before and after school programs at Camp Fire. Outside of camp, Danielle enjoys binge-watching tv shows, spending time with her friends and family, and reading Harry Potter.




Program Director

MARILYN BAGLEY

Marilyn has worked for Camp Fire Heart of Iowa since 2016. She attended Simpson College and graduated in 2015, with degrees in English and Secondary Education. She brings this background and passion for education to Camp Fire’s community based literacy programs. At Camp Fire, Marilyn is the director for two Des Moines based camps, Riverview Day Camp and Pioneer Columbus Day Camp, she is also the coordinator for Camp Fire’s Club programs. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, watching old movies, spending time with friends and family, and her two cats, Bill and Stanley.


Assistant Director – Camp Hantesa

OWEN BALLARD

Owen was born and raised in Urbandale, IA. He grew up attending Camp Fire programs in Des Moines and at Camp Hantesa. He attended Hantesa every summer as a kid and completed the Apprentice program before graduating from high school. He was a counselor at Hantesa for two years and then Apprentice Director for two years before joining the year-round staff. He attended Iowa State University and received Bachelors degrees in Youth Services and Biology. Owen is a licensed EMT and is also a certified Lifeguard Instructor and Wilderness EMT. In his spare time he enjoys playing with his dog, Robin, painting, reading, and camping.
